The Foundation Everything Else Is Built On

If there's one place I always look first — no matter what a client comes to me for — it's the gut.

Struggling with energy? Start with the gut. Hormones off? The gut plays a role. Skin breaking out? Mood unstable? Immune system constantly triggered? Inflammation that won't settle? Follow the trail — it almost always leads back to digestive health.

​

Your gut is not just where food gets broken down. It's where nutrients are absorbed, where a significant portion of your immune system lives, where many of your neurotransmitters — including serotonin — are produced, and where signals are constantly being sent to the rest of your body. When it's not functioning well, nothing downstream works the way it should.

This is why digestive health isn't just about fixing a bloated belly. It's foundational.

The obvious signs something's off:

  • Bloating — especially after meals

  • Gas, cramping, or abdominal discomfort

  • Constipation, diarrhea, or alternating between both

Many of these downstream issues don't get connected to the gut in conventional medicine. But in functional nutrition, the gut is almost always part of the conversation.

"Leaky Gut" — Real Thing or Buzzword?

You've probably heard the term. Leaky gut — or intestinal permeability — is very real, and increasingly supported by research. It's what happens when the lining of your intestinal wall becomes compromised, allowing particles that should stay in the digestive tract to cross into the bloodstream. This triggers an immune response and chronic low-grade inflammation that can show up almost anywhere in the body.

It doesn't get diagnosed on a standard requisition. But it can be assessed — and it can be healed.

A quick note if you're on PPIs or rely on antacids regularly

This one matters and not enough people hear it. Proton pump inhibitors and antacids work by reducing stomach acid — and they do provide relief. But stomach acid isn't the enemy. You actually need it to break down protein, absorb key minerals like iron, calcium, and B12, and protect against harmful bacteria.

Long term use of acid-suppressing medications can quietly contribute to nutrient deficiencies, bacterial overgrowth, and digestive dysfunction — the very things that made you reach for the antacid in the first place. If this is you, it's worth having a deeper conversation about what's actually driving the acid issues rather than just managing the symptom indefinitely.

I'm not here to tell you to stop your medication — that's a conversation for your prescribing physician. But I can absolutely help address the root of what's going on.

I want to be clear — I don't diagnose. That's not within my scope of practice and it's not what I do. What I do is look at the full picture of what's happening in your body, identify patterns and imbalances, and build a personalized protocol to support your digestive system from the ground up.

Here's what that typically looks like:

Step 1 Initial Consultation (Week 1) We do a comprehensive review of your health history, symptoms, diet patterns, and lifestyle. This gives us a clear starting picture and helps determine whether functional testing would be useful.

Step 2 Testing if indicated (Weeks 2–3) Depending on what we find, this might include a Gut Scan or Deep Gut Scan to assess your microbiome, an intestinal permeability test, food sensitivity testing, or other relevant panels. Results typically come back within 2–3 weeks.

​

Step 3 Results & Personalized Protocol (Week 3–4) We review your results together and I build your protocol — specific dietary changes with functional foods for your specific needs, targeted supplementation, and lifestyle adjustments based on your individual findings. Not a generic probiotic and a pamphlet. An actual plan built around you.

Step 4Follow-Up & Adjustment (Ongoing — typically every 3–6 weeks) Gut healing takes time — realistically 3 to 6 months for meaningful change, sometimes longer depending on what we're working with. Follow-up sessions allow us to track progress, troubleshoot, and adjust the protocol as your body responds.
